This blog article is being written to introduce you to KVPY- a very prestigious fellowship program/scholarship of Govt. of India for students from Class-XI onwards upto Post-Graduation. Date of form submission for KVPY 2012 has just expired yesterday (i.e. 07/09/12) and therefore I am writing another article titled: KVPY 2013 Notification, Form & Eligibility to help those who missed applying this time and the future aspirants to know the date schedules of KVPY. Now lets go back to know what is KVPY:
KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) is a national Program (Yojana) to encourage (Protsahan) Young (Kishore) students to undertake Scientific (Vaigyanik) research. In most simplified terms, KVPY is a catch –them-young program launched by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India, to attract motivated students for pursuing basic science courses and career in research.
While DST, Govt of India funds the program, it is administered by Indian Institute of Science. KVPY was first launched in 1999.
KVPY is a national level scholarship for three levels:
1.0 For Class XI students: Stream SA.
2.0 For Class XII students: Stream SX.
3.0 For 1st year Students of B. Sc. /B.S. / Integrated M.Sc. /M.S: Stream SB.
There was another stream called “Stream SP” (Basic Sciences including Engineering/Medicine) in previous KVPY exams, but same has been withdrawn from 2012 KVPY Fellowship award.
KVPY scholarship amount is as follows:
During 1st to 3rd year of B.Sc./B.S. /Integrated M.Sc. /M.S:
Monthly grant: Rs. 5000 & Annual Contingency Grant: Rs. 20000.
During M. Sc. / 4th to 5th years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S:
Monthly grant: Rs. 7000 & Annual Contingency Grant: Rs. 28000.
KVPY scholarship is continued only if:
1.0 You show consistent good academic performance: Minimum 1st class (60% marks) or equivalent grade in science subjects in each year in the first attempt.
2.0 You participate and perform satisfactorily in the summer program in the first year and Summer project every year. Summer Program for KVPY Fellows is arranged at Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER) - Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal, and Trivandrum for a week.
3.0 Scholarship in “Stream SA” will be continued after the XII Standard/ (+2) only if you pursue an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./Int. M.Sc./M.S.).
How many KVPY scholarship is awarded per year?
You can have an idea about number of KVPY scholarship being awarded every year, from the table at right for Stream-SA. As you can see the number of applicants and hence the number of scholarship is increasing year after year.
When is the notification for KVPY published?
KVPY notification is issued every year on 11th May (the Technology Day) and 2nd Sunday of July in major national dailies. The notification is published in this Official website for KVPY. While the KVPY forms are made available along with the notification (i.e. 2nd Sunday of July), last date of form submission is generally around 10th September. KVPY exam is held in October end/November beginning.
KVPY scholarship Selection process:
