Changes in CAT 2014 Vis-A-Vis last year:
As compared to last year, following are the important changes, for which you should be prepared:
1.0 The exam is going to be held on only two days: November 16 and November 22. Last year (i.e. CAT 2013 was held in a 20-day testing window. Thus you would have now fewer slots (total four: two sessions on each day) in CAT 2014 for choosing your preferred slot.
2.0 CAT 2014 duration has increased: It has gone up by half an hour i.e from 140 minutes to 170 minutes (two hours 50 minutes in total).
3.0 Number of questions in CAT 2014 has increased: Yes, you might have been happy knowing above that time has increased. But at the same time, number of questions has been increased too from 30 questions to 50 questions.
4.0 Time per questions has reduced: Thus, as you can find from above, time for answering each question has reduced from 2 min 20 Sec. to 1 Min 42 Sec Previously, with 30 questions in each of the two sections, total 60 questions had to be answered in 140 minutes. While in CAT 2014, 100 questions (2 section x 50 question each) has to be answered in 170 minute. This might indicate the difficulty level to go down.
5.0 Switching between sections enabled: You would be able to switch between the test sections any time in CAT 2014. This was not so in previous year in which you were not able to go back to previous sections.
6.0 No tutorial on exam day: Till last year there was a 15 minute tutorial (i.e. demo) for familiarisation of the actual exam just before the actual test. This will not be available this time and hence you should try out the tutorials from the CAT website before the exam.I see that Prometric site is still hosting last years tutorial and hence you can get a glimpse of the same. Mind it, this is last years.
7.0 Number of test city increased: CAT 2014 would be held in 99 city/towns all over India while last year it was held in only 44 cities. Hence it would be easier for you to find a test location close to your home!
What hast not changed in CAT 2014
There's been no change in the exam syllabus. Also test section remains same: Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning. So your preparation is well on track!
